Perry Jones Not Concerned With Individual Matchups

Mar 25, 2012 11:37 AM

Baylor's Perry Jones III is set to face Kentucky's Anthony Davis in the South Region final, which tips off at 2:00 p.m. ET Sunday.

Jones downplayed the importance of the matchup.

"I feel like everyone is more worried about my draft stock," Jones said. "I could care less right now. I can't go in there thinking about any one-on-one matchups... I'm looking forward to playing team basketball."

Jones is averaging 7.7 points on 50 percent shooting in three NCAA tourney games.

Perry Jones Defends Inconsistent Tourney Run

Mar 23, 2012 10:30 AM

Perry Jones III is averaging 4.5 points on 28.6 percent shooting in two NCAA tourney games.

“Sometimes my shot is not falling and I shy away from shooting the ball,” Jones said. “If my shot’s not falling, I’d rather go 1 for 7 then 1 for 20-something.”

Jones isn’t concerned with his NBA draft stock.

“It doesn’t create pressure because I haven’t been thinking about it,” Jones said. “The last thing I’ve been thinking about is the NBA. I’ve just been trying to get my team to a national championship. I know if I worry about the NBA, then everything will turn around, and it will just be worse. Just don’t worry about it. Just need to focus on the games I’m playing right now.”

Perry Jones 50-50 On NBA Draft

Mar 1, 2012 5:21 PM

Perry Jones III placed the odds of him remaining at Baylor at "50-50."

Baylor coach Scott Drew believes Jones' best days are still ahead.

"Getting tougher is a physical and mental thing," Drew said. "It's about competing every single possession and fighting and shoving and getting hit. It's about being a man. Thomas Robinson at Kansas is a man. Quincy Acy is a man.

"Perry is still young. He's getting stronger. When he's 26 or 28, that's when he's really going to be good. That's why the NBA is so in love with him. They know he's going to get better."

Perry’s mother, Terri, is battling dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart becomes weakened and enlarged and cannot pump blood efficiently. Perry’s entry into the NBA could help defray medical costs.

"I don't think he's going to stay at Baylor another year," Terri said. "I think he's more ready than he was a year ago. Last year we never talked about making the transition to the NBA, but this year we've discussed it a couple of times. I still don't think he's made a decision, though."
